Capital of the department of Ancash, north of Lima. The white and black ranges of the Andes crossthis region and impressive snow covered peaks crown the heights between the intermontane valley known as the callejon de Huaylas. The ruins of Chavín  de Huantar are to be found 116 kilometers south east of the city.
