Near to the Pacific Ocean. It is the capital of the department of La Libertad in northern Peru; an area containing many ancient ruins including Chan Chan, the largest mud- brick city in the southern hemisphere, as well as the El Brujo complex, Huaca del Sol, Huaca de la Luna, Huaca el Dragón or arcoiris  and Huaca Esmeralda. The beautiful Huanchaco beach is a few kilometres north of the city.
